ANS publications include the annual American Journal of Numismatics, which contains articles and notes pertaining to all areas of original numismatic research, and two differently formatted book-length publications of the same range of topics -- Numismatic Notes and Monographs (ANSNNM) and Numismatic Studies (ANSNS), both irregular series. Manuscripts for these publications are subject to editorial, curatorial, and peer review, and manuscripts for books must also be reviewed by the Publications Committee as well.
Two special series deal with the publication of coin holdings. Ancient Coins in North American Collections, (ACNAC), systematically and tersely describes and illustrates coins in significant private collections of ancient coins. In Sylloge Nummorum Graecorum, (SNGANS), the American Numismatic Society, sytematically and tersely describes and illustrates coins in the ANS Greek Collection. Both of these series are issued irregularly.
Numismatic Literature is issued twice a year and contains, under broad subject headings, a listing of recent articles and books relating to numismatics. The titles and abstracts are submitted either by the authors themselves or by one of nearly 40 international editors who are themselves well-known numismatists. Each NumLit volume has an author and a subject index, cross references, a listing of the sources for book reviews, and an obituary section.
The Society holds an annual meeting focused on Americana. The papers presented are published in the series Coinage of the Americas Conference proceedings (COAC). The members of the COAC Committee in conjunction with the relevant curatorial staff and the director select the topic for each COAC conference and invite the panel participants.
Authors are not remunerated for their submissions, although through the Donald Groves fund for early American research and publication some funding is available for research expenses. The editor, relevant curator(s), director, and outside readers share in deciding which articles and books should appear, who should oversee the publication, and where funding is to be found. Author revisions of manuscripts are often necessary. Any substantial alteration, however, becomes a new creation and therefore subject to the entire review process or outright rejection by the editor. Only after all materials have been submitted (revised manuscript, photographs, art work, permissions, etc.) will the work be scheduled for production.
