This spring, the medieval department of the ANS is sending exhibits to two conferences on medieval studies.
In conjunction with the meeting of the Medieval Academy of America at the University of Toronto, April 17-19, the ANS will mount an exhibit at the University Art Centre entitled "Trade Coins of the Medieval Mediterranean." The exhibit will feature examples of the Byzantine, Islamic, and European coinage which served as the basis for medieval trade from the end of the Roman period through the fifteenth century. At the Academy Meeting, ANS Curator of Medieval Coins, who put together the exhibit, will give a talk entitled "Venetian Commerce in the Later Middle Ages; Feast or Famine?" in a session on "Mediterranean Maritime History." Information on the meeting and exhibit can be had from the Centre for Medieval Studies, University of Toronto, 39 Queen's Park Crescent East, Toronto, Ontario, Canada M5S 2CS; (416) 978-4884.
From May 1 to 3, there will be a conference on "The World of Pope Innocent III," at Hofstra University, Hempstead, Long Island. During the meeting, the ANS will have on display in the Art Gallery of Hofstra University an exhibit entitled "Coinage in the Age of Innocent III," which will feature medieval European coinage from the period around A.D. 1200, and related Byzantine and Crusader issues. Information on the conference and exhibit can be had from Athelene A. Collins, Hofstra Cultural Center, 109 Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY 11550; (516) 463- 5669.
London-bound members will want to visit the new HSBC Money Gallery opening at the British Museum this February. A generous donation by the British firm HSBC Holdings plc has made possible the refurbishing and fitting out of a new gallery devoted to the story of money in all its aspects. Two new books mark the opening: Money - A History, edited by Jonathan Williams, intended as a guide to the exhibition; and a book for children, The Story of Money, by John Orna-Ornstein, both published by the British Museum Press.
