The ANS Council, at its meeting of January 11, 1997, took great pleasure in recording four new Sponsors of the Society, recognized for their contributions aggregating over $10,000. Entered in the Minutes were: Q. David Bowers, Wolfeboro, NH; George W. Fehlhaber, San Francisco, CA; Caroline Kay, Lawrence, KS; and Thomas R. Martin, Worcester, MA.
These loyal and generous contributors will be added to the roll of "Sponsors of the Society" published each year in the Annual Report of the ANS. We are grateful to these four new honorees and to all who contribute to the growth and welfare of our organization.
1996 Contributions Exceed $2.2 Million
During 1996, members and friends of the American Numismatic Society continued to demonstrate their support for the work of this fine institution through extraordinary personal, foundation, and corporate generosity. In the past calendar year, numismatic objects and library materials valued at ca. $1.5 million were added to the collections, greatly enriching the Society's storehouse of knowledge available to members and the public. To the coffers of the ANS was added $729,000, supporting a wide range of projects and programs, as well as providing much needed support for the core operations of the ANS, through member- sponsored Annual Giving.
An unprecedented number of ANS members are joining or renewing as Circle members. Gold, Electrum, Silver, and Bronze Circle members enjoy increased benefits and discounts while providing additional, much needed support for our organization.
As an added incentive this year, the special 1997 Calendar, "Treasures of the ANS American Cabinet," presented on the occasion of the Eric P. Newman Tribute Dinner on October 25, is available as our gift to all ANS members joining an ANS Circle in 1997 while they last. Quantities are limited and when the supply of calendars is gone, this offer will be withdrawn. The full color illustrations, featuring such rare and important American artifacts as the Brasher doubloon, 1804 Dollar, and the Confederate Half Dollar, among the twelve distinct and beautifully reproduced images, complement the monthly calendar pages which highlight key national dates as well as important ANS events during 1997.

Associate membership in the ANS is open to all with an interest in numismatics. Members receive a range of benefits including the Society's annual journal, American Journal of Numismatics, and are informed about forthcoming events and opportunities through receipt of the quarterly ANSNewsletter and special mailings. As an added benefit during 1997, members may elect to receive a free subscription to the Colonial Newsletter, a journal devoted to the numismatic history of the United States in the pre-Federal period, which was donated to the ANS by the CNL Foundation as of this year. Three issues of CNL will appear during 1997.
Members are eligible to receive a unique benefit during 1997. By joining an ANS Circle in 1997 -- Bronze, Silver, Electrum, or Gold -- a member will receive the special 1997 calendar, "Treasure of the ANS American Cabinet," presented on the occasion of the Eric P. Newman Tribute Dinner. Quantities are limited and when the supply of calendars is exhausted, the offer will be withdrawn.
New Life Members
At its January meeting, the Council recorded the following conversions to Life Membership: Sohail A. Khan, Islamabad, Pakistan (Assoc. 1996); William T. Loomis, Schnectady, NY (Assoc. 1992); Richard Mantia, Oak Forest, IL (Assoc. 1996); Emmett McDonald, Islip, NY (Assoc. 1961; Fellow 1994); Spencer Peck, Oldwick, NJ (Assoc. 1991).
All ANS members have the option to convert to Life Membership by the one-time payment of $1,000. Life Associates and Life Fellows are excused from the payment of annual dues and are insured against any increase in member dues.
Finke Elected Life Fellow
Sculptress Leonda Finke of Roslyn, NY, was elected a Life Fellow of the Society at the January Council meeting. Ms. Finke is the 1997 recipient of the Saltus Medal Award.
In our last ANSNewsletter, we published the list of members celebrating significant milestones in their Society membership. In error, we managed at this time last year to skip over those members whose memberships date from 1971, 1966, 1956, and 1946. We are grateful to have heard from several members pointing out our inadvertent neglect. To all we have sent special pins marking their 25, 30, 40, and 50 years of continuous membership and it is a particular pleasure to here acknowledge the names of these loyal, long-term members.

These four fifty-year members were honored at a special ceremony held at the Society last July. The ANS appreciates the many members who continue their support of this organization year after year.
1996: The Year in Review
1996 was a very good year! The ANS met its Annual Giving goals! We had many member supported activities, in addition to our regular lectures and events. There was the Forum on Arab- Byzantine Coins in November. The third annual Day of the Etruscans met in February. There was a major symposium in Chicago with an attendance of seventy. There was a Spring Cruise up the Hudson to the Rockefeller Estate. Thirty-five people enjoyed this day so thoroughly, we have had requests for a repeat. We honored four fifty-year members. ANS coins were exhibited at the Olympic games. The Colonial Newsletter was donated to the ANS and the first issue under our auspices will appear in April 1997. Eighty guests honored Eric P. Newman - scholar, numismatist, and gentleman, with a gala event on October 25th, with a lasting memento - a beautiful calendar with examples of major ANS American coins and a listing of 1997 important ANS dates.
The year was brilliantly capped by the member-sponsored exhibit at the New York International, "The Treasures Of Ancient Coinage from the Private Collections of American Numismatic Society Members;" an exhibition of 113 spectacular Greek and Roman coins. These collector/members not only lent coins and provided financial support for the exhibition, but also supplied photographs and cataloguing information, in some cases sharing significant unpublished research, all of which has been incorporated into the catalogue of the exhibit prepared by Guest Curator, Catharine C. Lorber. The Society is fortunate enough to have a supply of these profusely-illustrated catalogues.
1997: A Year of Challenge
Our Annual Giving goal for 1997 is $100,000. To meet this challenge, we must look to all members for support. We are offering two gifts in gratitude for member support of the core work of the ANS. Contributors at the level of $200 or more will receive the special ANS Donor's Pin, which may be worn with pride in the knowledge that you have provided significant support for this fine institution. Donors at this level may also elect to receive a complimentary copy the catalogue, Treasures Of Ancient Coinage. As always, gifts of any amount are greatly appreciated.
Corporate Matching Gifts
Do you work for a company that matches your charitable contributions? The ANS qualifies under most Corporate Matching Gift Programs and this is an excellent means of increasing the benefit to the Society of your intended generosity. We are indebted to the many members who designate the ANS as a beneficiary of matching gifts.
Please check with your employer about their matching gift policy. Most forward looking corporations want their philanthropy to reflect the interests and concerns of their employees.
You may be assured that your support, in any amount, is important to us. Your gift enables us to do what we do and to try and serve the membership to the best of our ability. An Annual Giving coupon is included. Please fill in the information requested and return it to the Society with your contribution.
I am pleased to enclose my Annual Giving contribution to support the core programs of the American Numismatic Society. Please list me as a donor at the level indicated (donors at the $200 level or higher will receive the ANS Donor Pin and may elect to receive a copy of Treasures of Ancient Coinage):
