Applications for Associate membership in the ANS are welcome from all with an interest in numismatics. Members receive a range of benefits including the Society's annual journal, American Journal of Numismatics, and are informed about forthcoming events and opportunities through receipt of the quarterly ANSNewsletter and special mailings. As an added benefit during 1997, members may elect to receive a free subscription to the Colonial Newsletter, a journal devoted to the numismatic history of the United States in the pre-Federal period, which was donated to the ANS by the CNL Foundation as of this year. A total of three issues of CNL will appear during 1997.

Members are eligible to receive a unique benefit during 1997. By joining an ANS Circle in 1997—Bronze, Silver, Electrum, or Gold—a member will receive the special 1997 calendar, "Treasures of the ANS American Cabinet," presented on the occasion of the Eric P. Newman Tribute Dinner. Quantities are limited and when the supply of calendars is exhausted, the offer will be withdrawn.

New Life Members

At its January meeting, the Council recorded the following conversions to Life Membership: Thomas E. Caton, Silver Spring, MD (Assoc. 1984); Marc Davidson, Daytona Beach, FL (Assoc. 1983); Jose Luis Herrera Somellera, Mexico City, Mexico (Assoc. 1971); and George Lill, Pa Paz, Bolivia (Assoc. 1980).

All ANS members have the option to convert to Life Membership by the one-time payment of $1,000. Life Associates and Life Fellows are excused from the payment of annual dues and thus spared any increase in dues.

Councillor Allen F. Lovejoy Dead at 77

Allen F. Lovejoy, an informed student of American coinage as historical documents, a discriminating collector, and a great friend of the American Numismatic Society, died on May 8 in CT, from complications resulting from a stroke.

Mr. Lovejoy, of Riverside, CT, a retired partner in the law firm of Breed, Abbott & Morgan, was elected a member of the ANS in 1975, a Fellow in 1978, and in 1988 was elected to his first term as a member of the Society's governing Council. At his death he served as First Vice-President and member of the Executive Committee of the ANS, in addition to several Council committees to which he devoted his legal and numismatic expertise. Dedicated to its financial well-being, he headed the ANS Development Committee and co-chaired the Society's Annual Giving campaigns.

Mr. Lovejoy was born in Janesville, WI, on October 9, 1919, the son of Henry Stow and Mary Beaton Lovejoy. A graduate of the Hotchkiss School, 1937, he received a B.A. from Yale University in 1941 with honors in history and received the Frank M. Patterson Prize. He enlisted in the United States Army, served in Normandy and Northern France, earned two Purple Hearts, and attained the rank of Major. In 1948, he received his L.L.B. from Yale and spent his career with the New York law firm of Breed Abbott, rising to partner in 1958; he retired in 1987.

An expert on early American dimes, he assembled one of the finest collections of U.S. dimes from 1796 to the present day, including every known variety of the early dimes. He is co-author of the definitive reference book on the subject, Early United States Dimes, 1796-1837, published in 1984 and featuring illustrations from his personal collection. His discoveries in the series were presented in a paper delivered at the ANS in 1986 as part of its annual Coinage of the Americas Conference.

Mr. Lovejoy held memberships in the Stanwich Club of Greenwich, the Riverside Yacht Club, the Pilgrim's Club of NYC, and the Mid Ocean Club of Bermuda. He is survived by his widow, Betty Foote Lovejoy, three children, Jennifer Craddock, Charles F. Lovejoy, and Allen P. Lovejoy, and seven grandchildren.

Saccocci Elected Corresponding Member

At its meeting of April 12, 1997, the Society's Council elected Professor Andrea Saccocci, of the University of Udine, Italy, as a Corresponding Member of the ANS, a class of membership honoring foreign scholars of distinction. Professor Saccocci did his laureate research at the University of Padua on archaic Greek coinage, but most of his scholarly research has been in the field of medieval Italian coinage. He has written extensively on the circulation of coinage in the Veneto, Friuli, and Tyrol regions and has published numerous hoards and excavation reports. From 1982 until his appointment in 1992 as Professor of Numismatics in Udine, Saccocci was Director of the Botacin Numismatic Collection of the Museo Civico of Padua. Professor Saccocci was the Visiting Scholar in Residence for the 1996 ANS Graduate Seminar Program.

Fellows Elected

At its April 12 meeting, the Council of the ANS elected six new Fellows, bringing the number of voting members of the Society to 197. The class of Fellows is limited to 200 in total.

Lawrence A. Adams of Studio City, CA, has been an Associate since 1982. A physician, Dr. Adams is a serious collector of world gold including an outstanding selection of Greek coinage. Examples from his collection were featured in the NYINC exhibition, "Treasures of Ancient Coinage," organized by Dr. Arnold-Peter Weiss, a member of the Society's Council. Adams, who served as a special consultant on the Krause world gold book published in 1991, is very active in west coast numismatic circles and regularly visits the east in conjunction with the NYINC.

Gerald F. Borrmann, an Associate since 1993, resides in Lafayette, CA. A retired petroleum engineer, Borrmann's numismatic interests center on Greek and Roman coinage, particularly gold and large size issues such as Ptolemaic. He has been the principal organizer and facilitator for both ANS/San Francisco Ancient Numismatic Society colloquia held at Berkeley in 1994 and 1996; for the latter conference he acted as moderator. In 1994, the ANS presented him its medal in recognition of his efforts.

George S. Cuhaj of Waupaca, WI, has been a member of the ANS since 1978. Currently the Managing Editor of the Catalogue Division of Krause Publications, Iola, WI, Cuhaj was ANS Systems Operator from the inception of computerization at the Society in 1981 through 1988 when he left to become the Head Usher at St. Patricks Cathedral in NYC. A graduate of the Baruch School, NYC, Cuhaj has written a series of articles on medals and tokens, including a contribution to the Society's 125th anniversary supplement in Coin World and participated in the program of the Society's 1994 Coinage of the Americas Conference, later published in The Token: America's Other Money, COAC Proceedings 10 (1995). Since 1994, he has served on the Society's Medals and Decorations Committee and has been recognized for his own medallic creations.

Lawrence E. Cutler, M.D., an Associate member since 1992, lives and practices in New York City (together with his wife Eileen, also a medical doctor) and has participated actively in the public and social events of the Society since becoming a member. His collecting specialty is the Carson City Mint. He is co-author with Doug Winter of the informative and highly readable Gold Coins of the Old West, the Carson City Mint, 1870-1893 (1994).

Scott H. Miller, of New York City, an Associate since 1979, is a graduate of Brooklyn College and is a career civil servant in the Immigration and Naturalization Service, Citizenship Section. A medals collector, he specializes in issues related to the British Empire and Commonwealth. His carefully researched study, "Medallic Memorials of the Visit of the Prince of Wales to North America in 1860," was presented to the 1992 COAC and subsequently published in the volume Canada's Money. A member of the ANS Medals Committee, he has contributed generously to the Society's medals cabinet since 1981, frequently identifies important acquisition opportunities to the medals' curator, and has been generally helpful in building this area of the collection and identifying its strengths.

Philip L. Mossman, M.D., of Hampden, ME, has been an Associate member of the ANS since 1987. Mossman's interest in and contributions to the study of early American coinages are serious and scholarly. His book, Money of the American Colonies and Confederation, published by the ANS as ANSNS 20 (1993), has been well received and broadly commended. He organized and chaired the Society's 1995 COAC on "Coinage of the American Confederation Period," and edited the resultant proceedings volume. Central to the Society's ability to accept the contribution of the Colonial Newsletter as of 1997 is Mossman's willingness to serve as the volunteer Editor of the journal, the first 1997 issue of which has recently been distributed a full month ahead of schedule.

Circle Memberships

It is a pleasure to record the names of ANS members who join or renew their memberships as Circle Members, thereby taking advantage of the tiered dues structure to enjoy increased benefits and discounts while providing additional, much needed support for our organization.

As an added incentive this year, the special 1997 Calendar, "Treasures of the ANS American Cabinet," presented on the occasion of the Eric P. Newman Tribute Dinner on October 25, is available as our gift to all ANS members joining an ANS Circle in 1997 while they last. Quantities are limited and when the supply of calendars is gone, this offer will be withdrawn. The full color illustrations, featuring such rare and important American artifacts as the Brasher doubloon, the 1804 Dollar, and the Confederate Half Dollar, complement the monthly calendar pages which highlight key national dates as well as important ANS events during 1997.
