Chester Starr, Fellow of the Society since 1987, died on September 22, 1999 at the age of 84. Starr was the author of the standard work Athenian Coinage 480-449 BC. Starr was best known among the general public for his History of the Ancient World (1965), which is one of the classic textbooks on antiquity. His widespread research interests included military history (Roman Imperial Navy, published in 1941), and Roman imperial history. He wrote over 20 books and was the author of numerous articles and book reviews.
Starr, born in 1914, graduated from the University of Missouri; he received his PhD in 1938 from Cornell University. He served in the United States Army from 1942-46; he was decorated with the Decorated Bronze Star and the Croce di Guerra of Italy. From 1940 to 1970 he was a Professor at the University of Illinois. In 1970 he was made Professor at the University of Michigan where he was the Bentley Professor of History from 1973 to 1985.
