| COIN DEALER STACK'S DONATES GIFT MEMBERSHIPS TO THE ANS |
New York, NY, July 20, 2000 - The American Numismatic Society (ANS) announced today that the renowned New York City coin dealer/auctioneer Stack's generously agreed to sponsor 200 ANS memberships.
In its July catalogue, the dealer announced that in order to support the Society and its exciting future at its newly purchased building in the financial district, Stack's wanted to help the membership of the ANS grow. Therefore, the company announced that it would sponsor the first 100 collectors who wanted $40 ANS Associate Memberships (excluding renewals). The response was so great that 125 people contacted the company immediately, and at present, the amount of interested parties is at 175. Because of the high interest in its offer, Stack's agreed to extend its contribution amount to 200 members, increasing the Society's entire membership by nearly 10%.
Ute Wartenberg, Executive Director of the ANS said, "We are thrilled with the response and are truly grateful to Stack's for their generous support of our organization. Their action not only supports the ANS financially, but also introduces people to our organization and creates a foundation of further support in the future. We thank Stack's for their support and the creative thinking behind it."
The American Numismatic Society, founded in 1858, is a non-profit international center for the preservation and study of coins, medals and paper money, representing more than 2,500 years of culture. The ANS collection contains almost one million objects and spans all periods and geographic areas, including Greek and Roman, medieval and modern European, American, Islamic, Asian and African coins, as well as other materials. In addition, the ANS has the world's finest numismatic library, which also contains non-numismatic monographs and references on history, art, economics, language and culture. Both the collection and the library are available to the public.
In 1998, The American Numismatic Society purchased a new building at 140 William Street in the heart of New York's Financial District. The new building has approximately 10,000 more square feet than the current ANS building and is conveniently located. The Society, presently located in Upper Manhattan, expects to move from its current location to 140 William Street in calendar year 2001.
