In 1947, both India and Pakistan claimed their independence from the British
colonial government that had ruled there since the late 18th century. The troubled
aftermath of World War II led to revolution and the establishment of a communist
government in China, while in Japan, the power of the Emperor was replaced by a
constitutional democracy.
