ANS E-NEWS JUNE 2005
CABINET ACTIVITY
* The ANS continues to welcome more numismatists to our
facilities. The month of May saw visits to the collection
by a number of leading American Colonial coin specialists.
Curator of North American Coins and Currency Robert Hoge
enjoyed hosting these visitors, including John Howes,
John Lorenzo, Roger Moore, Don Partrick, Neil Rothschild,
Roger Siboni, Ray Williams and Dave Wnuck. Several
participated in a familiarization and research day organized
by Roger Siboni. They were able to study many specimens
of interest in the cabinet, utilize the Library and see
the extensive historic photo files of 4 x 5 negatives,
covering all aspects of numismatics.

PUBLICATIONS
* Curator of North American Coins and Currency Robert Hoge
wrote an article on the Indian Peace Medals of the Lewis
and Clark Expedition, which was published in the latest
number of the Newsletter of the Medallic Art Society
of Canada (April 2005, Issue 11). Entitled "Cargo of
Conciliation: Lewis and Clark's Indian Peace Medals,"
the article looks at the Jefferson and earlier Washington
medals that the expedition is known to have carried
from an historical perspective and also describes the
various pieces in detail -- including the U.S. dollar,
which the captains utilized as a presentation medal of
the smallest size.
THIS MONTH IN ANS HISTORY
* June 1922: J. Sanford Saltus dies in London after drinking a glass of
poison he mistook for ginger ale.
Under his sponsorship, the ANS significantly increased production of
medals and established an award, named in his honor, for individuals who
display achievement in medallic art. To learn more about Saltus, his
untimely death, and his contributions to the ANS, please visit:
