ACADEMIC WORKSHOPS and LECTURES
* ANS recently hosted a Workshop on the Strawberry
Leaf/Wreath Cent 1793 American large cent specialist Dan
Holmes brought in his two examples of the famous 1793
"Strawberry leaf" issue as well as other varieties from his
collection, permitting us to hold a small workshop on the
Wreath cent. Not only were we then able to compare three
of the four known Strawberry leaf coins (including both
reverses, D and E), it was also possible to compare the dies
and edge markings of every variety in the series. To read
more about the workshop please see the Spring 2005 Issue
of the ANS Magazine.
* On March 23rd Sebastian Heath will be visiting Bryn
Mawr College to participate in Dr. Eleni Hasaki's seminar

presentation will be on the cultural and economic contexts
of ceramic imports in Late Roman Gaul. For information

ARCHIVIST NEWS
Month in ANS History
March 1942: The Society opens its Early Coinages of the
Americas exhibition to great acclaim.
In what was the major event of the year, the ANS mounts
an exhibition of the earliest American coins, which runs
from March 2nd through April 14th. The exhibition is hailed
for including "many of the greatest Colonial rarities." The
highlight of the exhibition is a series of Massachusetts
colonial coins. Reviews at the time note that "[n]ever
before has so nearly complete a series of New England
coins been brought together." To learn more about this important
exhibition and its aftermath, visit:

* Historical Additions to the ANS Website: Herbert E.
Ives biography In 1942, Herbert Ives began a five year tenure as
the 14th president of the ANS. A world-renown
scientist ‹ he
helped invent both television and night vision ‹ Ives also
proved an able administrator. The Society mounted
remarkable exhibits and published numerous monographs
during Ives' tenures as president, despite significant fiscal
constraints. In addition, Ives helped coordinate the
acquisition of the mammoth Newell Collection. Under
Ives' leadership, the Society also began its first successful
effort to attract students to study at the Society ‹ an effort
which eventually led to the formation of the Graduate
Summer Seminar in the early 1950s. To read more about
this fascinating figure and the important events of his
presidency, visit: http://www.amnumsoc.org/archives/ivesbio.htm

in helping us find the listed items for our shelves. For more
information contact Frank Campbell at Campbell@numismatics.org.
