MEMBER NEWS
* The ANS community mourns the death of its benefactor and
long-time member John J. Ford,Jr. on July 7th at the age of 81.
The ANS recently named the reading room on the main floor of
its new library after Mr. Ford. An obituary will appear in
the winter volume of the ANS magazine.
ACADEMIC WORKSHOPS AND LECTURES
* The Eric P. Newman Graduate Summer Seminar continues
through to the end of July, and this year many of its
lectures are open for attendance by members. Upcoming
events include Peter van Alfen's lecture entitled
"Cooperative Coinages" at 10:00 am on Friday, July 15th,
Sebastian Heath's "Roman Coins and Roman Dining" at 10:00
am on Wednesday, July 20th, and Michael Bates' "Money before
Machinery" at 10:00 am on Friday, July 22nd.
PUBLICATIONS
* The Summer 2005 ANS Magazine went to press last week.
The cover story is "Long Live Our Glorious Mother Land!
Posters and Medals from the Birth of the Cold War" by
Peter van Alfen. In this issue as well, Aviva Gray writes
about a distingusihed former ANS curator in "Agnes
Baldwin Brett: A Pioneer Numismatist and Archaeologist
at the ANS." This upcoming issue will be the first to
appear entirely in color.
EVENTS
* Robert Hoge and Ute Wartenberg Kagan will be attending
the ANA's World Fair of Money in San Francisco, July 27 to
31. The ANS is looking for generous volunteers to give
their time to assist at our booth. To volunteer or for
further information, please contact Joanne Isaac at
isaac@numismatics.org.
* Plans are proceeding for the 2006 Annual Dinner Gala
which will be held on Thursday, January 12 at the Sky Club
Penthouse of the Met Life Building in NYC. Prior to the dinner,
we will be holding an auction of numismatic books, manuscripts,
and memoribilia to benefit the Francis D. Campbell Librarian
Chair. If you have items to donate (of approximately $400
or more in value), please contact event Chair Rick
Witschonke at witschonke@numismatics.org.

THIS MONTH IN ANS HISTORY
* July 1866: The ANS Merges with the New York Numismatic Society
During the dormant period of the ANS from the fall of 1859 through
February of 1864 a competing organization, the New York Numismatic
Society, was formed.
