MEMBER NEWS
* The ANS wishes to extend its sympathies to all our members and to all
others affected by hurricane Katrina. ANS Trustee Ken Harl, who is a
professor at Tulane University in New Orleans, reports that he and his
parents evacuated before the storm hit and have now found new
accomodations in Hauppauge, NY on Long Island. Anyone wanting to reach
Dr. Harl can contact the ANS.

ACTIVITIES AND AWARDS
* Presentation of the J. Sanford Saltus Award for Outstanding
Achievement in the Art of the Medal and the Stephen K. Scher Lecture
will both take place at the ANS on Saturday, September 17, 2005
beginning at 3:30 pm. The Saltus Award recipient is Netherlandish
sculptor Theo van de Vathorst. Dr. Jeffrey Smith of the University of
Texas will give the Scher Lecture entitled "Suddenly Mad about
Portraits: Creating a Taste for German Renaissance Medals and
Sculptures". Attendees are also invited to view a selection of Theo van
de Vathorst's work as well as an exhibition on German Renaissance medals
prepared by Robert Hoge and Elena Stolyarik. Following will be a
cocktail reception at the ANS and a dinner, at 7:00 p.m., to be held at
The 14 Wall Street Restaurant, 31st Floor Penthouse. Dinner is $50 per
person. R.S.V.P. necessary to attend. Please contact Juliette Pelletier

* The American Numismatic Society's 148th Annual Meeting: Please join us
for our 148th Annual Meeting on Saturday, October 22, 2005 at 3:00 pm at
the ANS. The agenda includes reports by the President, Treasurer,
Librarian and Curatorial Staff; election of Trustees will be held; and
new acquisitions will be on view. Reception to follow. For further

LIBRARY BULLETIN
* Reminder: The benefit auction to raise funds for the Francis D.
Campbell Library Chair will be held on January 12th, 2006, in
conjunction with the annual ANS Gala dinner. It will take place at the
Sky Club on the 56th floor of the Met Life Building, 200 Park Avenue,
and the lots offered will consist of numismatic books, manuscripts, and
memorabilia. We encourage all friends of the Library to donate items
(approx. $400 or more in value individually or as a small group of 3-4
items). Items for inclusion should be brought to the attention of event
Chair Rick Witschonke (Witschonke@numismatics.org). Parcels can be
mailed to the attention of the ANS Librarian at the Society's address
and reservation details can be obtained from Juliette Pelletier,
Membership and Development Manager (Pelletier@numismatics.org). Now is
the time for all good people to come to the aid of ....
